Physiotherapy for Joint Pain Related to Perimenopause / Menopause in Singapore

Joint pain is one of the most common yet overlooked symptoms during perimenopause and menopause. In Singapore, it is the number one menopausal complaint. Nearly 75% of women experience joint or muscle pain, with over 60% reporting it as moderate to severe. At Calyx, we offer specialised physiotherapy to ease pain, restore movement, and help you feel strong and supported through this life stage.

What Is Perimenopause / Menopause Physiotherapy for Joint and Muscle Pain?

This targeted physiotherapy supports your body through midlife changes. Hormonal shifts affect strength, flexibility, and recovery. Our approach focuses on personalised movement strategies, gentle strength work, and pain relief techniques so you can stay active, protect your joints, and feel more at home in your changing body.

Is This Safe for Me?

Yes. Our treatments are safe, gentle, and tailored to your stage of life. Whether you are in early perimenopause or postmenopause, our experienced physiotherapists understand the changes you are facing. With clinical expertise and a supportive approach, we help you heal with confidence and care.

Who Should Consider Perimenopause / Menopause Physiotherapy for Joint and Muscle Pain?

This care is for women experiencing joint aches, muscle pain, fatigue, or other symptoms linked to hormonal shifts. At Calyx, we support you with gentle, targeted treatment and guide you safely into strength-based movement. Our approach helps you stay active, reduce pain, and feel strong through this life stage.

  • Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with Calyx for a thorough assessment and personalised care plan. If needed, our physiotherapists will work closely with your doctor to ensure your care is seamless, coordinated, and fully aligned with your health needs.

  • Is This Suitable Before or After Childbirth? Or Both?

This care is suitable both before and after childbirth. Perimenopause can begin in your thirties or forties, even shortly after giving birth. At Calyx, we personalise each session to your unique hormonal, pelvic, and musculoskeletal needs, offering gentle and expert support at every stage of your journey.

Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from This Treatment

Common signs include:

  • Joint pain or stiffness in knees, hips, shoulders, neck, hands, or lower back
  • Muscle aches or weakness affecting daily movement
  • Postural changes due to weight gain or hormonal shifts
  • Difficulty with activities requiring strength or flexibility
  • Fatigue linked to discomfort or poor sleep

During perimenopause, falling oestrogen weakens collagen and connective tissues, causing joint laxity and muscle loss. This leads to pain, stiffness and instability. Knowing this helps you recognise your symptoms are real and treatable.

If you have vaginal dryness or discomfort, these may be signs of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM).

What Happens During Your Calyx Session

Your treatment begins with a thorough conversation and physical assessment to identify contributing factors and tailor the treatment and management approach.

  • Will There Be an Internal Assessment?

Only if appropriate and with your full consent. In many cases, external assessments provide all the information we need. We always prioritise comfort and informed choice.

  • Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?

Just wear comfortable clothing. If you’ve undergone recent scans or bloodwork related to menopause, feel free to bring the reports along.

  • What Happens After the Session?

You’ll receive a tailored programme that may include home exercises, movement tips, and lifestyle guidance. Ongoing support is available as needed.

  • Can I Do My First Session via Telehealth?

Yes, your first session can be done via telehealth. We conduct a thorough assessment, provide early guidance, and may ask you to track symptoms. If needed, we’ll recommend an in-person visit or continue care remotely based on your condition.

Techniques and Tools We May Use

  • Myofascial release and joint mobilisation
  • Clinical Pilates-based rehabilitation
  • Lifestage-focused strength training
  • Core and postural retraining
  • Real Time Ultrasound for core activation and function
  • Bone health education and exercises
  • Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?

Most patients feel relief rather than pain. Some techniques may cause brief intensity or mild soreness afterward, but only with your consent. Our physiotherapists explain each step clearly and provide advice for managing any discomfort.

  • How We Ensure Safety in Each Method

We use evidence-based techniques tailored to your comfort, life stage, and needs. Our fully trained physiotherapists are registered with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) and stay up-to-date through ongoing professional development, so you can trust you’re receiving safe, personalised care.

Your Progress and Results Over Time

  • How Soon Will I See Improvement?

Improvement varies from person to person and depends on the severity of your symptoms, your individual response to treatment, and how consistent you are with your home exercises.

After a thorough assessment, your physiotherapist will provide a clearer timeline and guide you through realistic expectations for progress.

  • How Often Will I Need Sessions?

Treatment usually starts with one to two sessions per week. Acute pain may improve sooner, while chronic issues take longer. Frequency depends on your progress, comfort with changes, and support needs. We tailor your plan to suit your pace and goals.

  • Will I Need Maintenance Visits?

After your initial progress, ongoing support can help you maintain strength, posture, and healthy movement habits as you navigate midlife changes and beyond. You may benefit from one-to-one check-ins or join Resilient in Transition, our specialised programme designed to support lasting bone health, mobility, and confidence throughout this chapter of life.

  • What Do I Need to Do at Home?

You’ll be given a customised home programme with self-management and pain relief strategies, stretches and strengthening exercises.

  • Can I Continue My Sessions Through Telehealth?

Yes, tele-rehabilitation is available for ongoing support, especially if you cannot visit the clinic regularly. Your physiotherapist will guide you through exercises, monitor your progress, and adjust your plan to ensure effective care from home.

CHLOE NG
Co-founder, Senior Physiotherapist

Chloe is a dedicated women’s health physiotherapist whose personal and professional journey has shaped her compassionate approach to care. Early in her career, she noticed that many women’s health concerns, including incontinence, painful intercourse and fertility challenges, were often dismissed or left unspoken. This sparked her commitment to specialise in pelvic health and provide women with the support they deserve.

She pursued training in pelvic health assessment and management, and integrates Polestar Pilates principles into her practice to restore functional movement, postural alignment, and overall wellbeing.

Her personal decision to go through two unmedicated births reinforced her belief in the power of education, preparation, and informed support during pregnancy and beyond.
