What Is Pelvic Girdle Pain?
Pelvic Girdle Pain is characterised by pain, instability, or discomfort in the joints of the pelvic girdle, specifically the sacroiliac joints, pubic symphysis, and surrounding soft tissues. Symptoms may include pain in the lower back, hips, groin, or thighs, as well as difficulty with movements such as walking, climbing stairs, or turning in bed.
Is This Safe for Me?
Yes. Treatment is always tailored to your comfort level and needs. We conduct a thorough assessment and work collaboratively with you, ensuring your emotional safety and informed consent at each step.
Who Should Consider Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment?
Women who are trying to conceive should consider treatment if they experience pelvic, hip, or lower back pain during daily activities. Discomfort during intimacy or exercise may also be a sign of pelvic dysfunction. Early physiotherapy intervention can improve mobility, reduce pain, and optimise pelvic function and alignment.

Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.
-
Can Pelvic Girdle Pain affect my chances of getting pregnant?
Pelvic Girdle Pain itself doesn’t directly affect fertility, but it can impact your ability to engage in regular physical activity, manage stress, or have comfortable intercourse. These factors all play an important role when trying to conceive.
Signs You May Benefit from Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment
Common signs include:
- Pain in the pelvic region, lower back, hips, or thighs
- Difficulty walking, standing, or climbing stairs
- Pain during movements like turning in bed or getting out of a car
- Audible clicking or grinding in the pelvic area
These symptoms may be related to joint misalignment, muscle imbalances, poor core stability, or changes in movement patterns.
What Happens During Your Session
Your session will include a full assessment, targeted treatment, movement guidance, and a clear plan to support ongoing recovery.
-
Will There Be an Internal Vaginal Assessment?
Not always. If you have pelvic floor symptoms affecting your bladder, bowel, or sexual health, and your physio thinks it may be linked to your PGP, an internal check may be recommended. However, the assessment is never done without your full consent.
We can also explore alternative methods such as external pelvic floor assessment or real-time ultrasound to gather information about your pelvic floor function. While these alternatives can still be helpful, they may provide limited insight compared to an internal assessment.
-
Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?
Come in comfortable clothing. If you’ve had any previous scans or investigations, such as an X-ray or MRI of your spine or pelvis, feel free to bring them along. They can help us better understand your condition.
-
What Happens After the Session?
You’ll receive a personalised plan, including education, self-care tips, and targeted exercises.
Techniques and Tools We May Use
- Manual therapy (Joint mobilisation or myofascial release)
- Personalised home exercises
- Postural education
- Use of modalities such as TECAR therapy, ultrasound therapy or TENS
-
Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?
Treatments are designed to relieve discomfort, not cause it. Most clients report feeling a sense of relief, control, and progress after their sessions.
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may initially experience sensations similar to your usual pain. However, your therapist will always proceed at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you
-
How We Ensure Safety in Each Method
We practise trauma-informed care, which means nothing is ever done without your consent, and you are in control of the process. We pause or adjust as needed.
Your Progress and Results Over Time
-
How Soon Will I See Improvement?
Improvement depends on the severity, chronicity, and underlying causes of your symptoms. Your physiotherapist will work closely with you to set realistic expectations and guide you through each step of your recovery.
-
How Often Will I Need Sessions?
The frequency of sessions depends on several factors, including your symptoms, goals, medical history, lifestyle demands, and how your body responds to treatment.
Your physiotherapist will first complete a thorough assessment to understand your condition fully before recommending a personalised treatment plan.
-
Will I Need Maintenance Visits?
After recovery, our goal is for you to manage your health independently. For pain-free women, we offer preventive care through our Recalibrate By Calyx programme to optimise posture, movement, and strength. If you become pregnant, you’re welcome to join Rooted for Birth, our signature programme designed to support your body through pregnancy and beyond.
-
What Do I Need to Do at Home?
We’ll guide you through targeted exercises and may also need to make small ergonomic changes to take pressure off your pelvic joints. Staying consistent with these strategies can make a big difference in your progress.
