Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) during pregnancy can make simple movements like walking, standing, or turning in bed uncomfortable. At Calyx, we help women move with confidence and ease again through gentle, evidence-based care tailored to your body and pregnancy journey.
What Is Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment?
Pelvic Girdle Pain is characterised by pain, instability, or discomfort in the joints of the pelvic girdle, specifically the sacroiliac joints, pubic symphysis, and surrounding soft tissues. Treatment at Calyx involves a personalised combination of manual therapy, movement education and lifestyle modification.
Is This Safe for Me?
Yes. Our treatments are pregnancy-safe and always tailored to your current health status. We avoid any positions, pressures, or techniques that could cause harm to you or your baby.
Who Should Consider Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment?
You may benefit from treatment if your pelvic pain interferes with walking, sleeping, or daily life. Whether symptoms began before or during your pregnancy, you don’t have to push through the pain.
-
Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.
-
Will Pelvic Girdle Pain go away after I give birth?
For some women, symptoms ease after birth, but for others, pelvic girdle pain can persist if not properly managed. Physiotherapy during pregnancy can reduce discomfort now and lower the risk of ongoing pain after delivery by supporting proper movement, alignment and muscle function.
Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from Pelvic Girdle Pain Treatment
Common signs include:
- Pain in the pelvic region, lower back, hips, or thighs
- Difficulty walking, standing, or climbing stairs
- Pain during movements like turning in bed or getting out of a car
- Audible clicking or grinding in the pelvic area
These symptoms may be related to joint misalignment, muscle imbalances, poor core stability, or changes in movement patterns.
What Happens During Your Session
Your session will include a full assessment, targeted treatment, movement guidance and a clear plan to support ongoing recovery.
-
Will There Be an Internal Assessment?
Not always. If you have pelvic floor symptoms affecting your bladder, bowel, or sexual health, and your physio thinks it may be linked to your PGP, an internal check may be recommended. However, the assessment is never done without your full consent.
We can also explore alternative methods such as external pelvic floor assessment or real-time ultrasound to gather information about your pelvic floor function. While these alternatives can still be helpful, they may provide limited insight compared to an internal assessment.
-
Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?
Come in comfortable clothing. If you’ve had any previous scans or investigations, such as an X-ray or MRI of your spine or pelvis, feel free to bring them along. They can help us better understand your condition.
-
What Happens After the Session?
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what’s contributing to your pain and a simple plan for relief. Follow-up may include guided exercises or lifestyle tips.
Techniques and Tools We May Use
- Manual therapy (Joint mobilisation or myofascial release)
- Taping or supportive belts
- Breathing and postural retraining
- Personalised home exercises
- Use of modalities such as TENS
-
Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?
Treatments are designed to relieve discomfort, not cause it. Most clients report feeling a sense of relief, control, and progress after their sessions.
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may initially experience sensations similar to your usual pain. However, your therapist will always proceed at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you

How We Ensure Safety in Each Method

Your Progress and Results Over Time
-
How Soon Will I See Improvement?
Improvement depends on the severity, chronicity, and underlying causes of your symptoms. Your physiotherapist will work closely with you to set realistic expectations and guide you through each step of your recovery.
-
How Often Will I Need Sessions?
The frequency of sessions depends on several factors, including your symptoms, goals, medical history, lifestyle demands, and how your body responds to treatment.
Your physiotherapist will first complete a thorough assessment to understand your condition fully before recommending a personalised treatment plan.
-
Will I Need Maintenance Visits?
Yes, especially as your pregnancy progresses and your body continues to change. After your initial recovery, ongoing support can make a big difference. You may benefit from one-to-one preventive check-ins or by enrolling in Rooted for Birth, our signature programme designed to keep you strong, mobile, and well-prepared for pregnancy and childbirth.
-
What Do I Need to Do at Home?
We’ll guide you through targeted exercises and may also need to make small ergonomic changes to take pressure off your pelvic joints. Staying consistent with these strategies can make a big difference in your progress.
