C-Section Rehabilitation

A Caesarean birth is often misunderstood. It is not less significant than vaginal birth. It involves major surgery and deep recovery. At Calyx, we honour your experience and support your return to movement, comfort, and confidence. We provide personalised C-section rehabilitation tailored to your body’s healing process and emotional journey.

What Is C-Section Rehabilitation?

It is postnatal physiotherapy designed for recovery after Caesarean delivery. We support scar healing, rebuild core strength, improve posture, and address pelvic floor function to help you feel strong and supported again.

Is This Safe for Me?

Yes. All sessions are guided by trained physiotherapists with experience in postnatal care. We tailor your plan based on your healing, comfort, and goals, and always begin with a thorough consultation to ensure it is safe and right for you.

Who Should Consider C-Section Rehabilitation?

Anyone who has had a Caesarean birth can benefit, whether recently or years ago. Some issues, like weakness, tightness, or discomfort, can surface much later. Rehab supports your body’s full recovery, no matter where you are in your journey.

  • Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.

  • Is This Suitable Before or After Childbirth? Or Both?

Our focus is on postpartum rehabilitation. However, women planning an elective C-section can benefit from prehabilitation to improve surgical recovery outcomes.

Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from C-Section Rehabilitation

Common signs:

  • Scar pain, tightness, or sensitivity
  • Weak core or pelvic floor
  • Poor posture or back pain
  • Numbness or tingling around the scar
  • Emotional discomfort around touching the scar area
  • Persistent “mummy tummy” or bulge
  • Bladder or bowel control issues

Many women experience these symptoms long after birth. Rehabilitation can gently address core recovery, scar tissue, and body awareness so you can feel stronger and more at home in your body again.

What Happens During Your Session

Your session is private, gentle, and guided by your pace and comfort. We begin with listening to your story, followed by an individualised physical assessment and treatment.

  • Will There Be an Internal Assessment?

An internal pelvic floor assessment is offered but never required. It allows your physiotherapist to assess how your pelvic floor is recovering after birth.

We can also explore alternative methods such as external pelvic floor assessment or real-time ultrasound to gather information about your pelvic floor function. While these alternatives can still be helpful, they may provide limited insight compared to an internal assessment.

  • Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?

Comfortable clothing, a list of concerns or symptoms, and your birth story (if you’re open to sharing). No referral is required.

  • What Happens After the Session?

You’ll receive a tailored recovery plan with practical home strategies, simple exercises, and clear next steps. We remain available for ongoing support.

Techniques and Tools We May Use

  • Scar mobilisation therapy
  • Gentle core activation exercises
  • Postural retraining
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Myofascial release
  • Clinical Pilates
  • Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?

Most techniques are gentle. You remain in full control of each session, and we always prioritise your physical and emotional comfort.

  • How We Ensure Safety in Each Method

We follow post-surgical guidelines, screen for red flags, and adjust techniques based on your healing stage and sensitivity. We work closely with you and your obstetrician to ensure coordinated care and a safe, supported recovery journey.

Your Progress and Results Over Time

  • How Soon Will I See Improvement?

Many women feel initial relief within 2 to 3 sessions, especially with scar discomfort. Strengthening and coordination improvements may take 6 to 12 weeks.

  • How Often Will I Need Sessions?

Most start with weekly visits, then shift to fortnightly or monthly based on progress and goals.

  • Will I Need Maintenance Visits?

After early recovery, continued support can help you regain strength and confidence as you care for your baby and step into your new (or expanded) role as a mum. You may benefit from one-to-one check-ins or join Regrounded After Birth, our signature programme designed to support healing, movement, and a safe return to daily life and higher-level exercise.

  • What Do I Need to Do at Home?

We provide simple, safe movements, breathing exercises, and scar care techniques to reinforce healing between sessions.

CHLOE NG
Co-founder, Senior Physiotherapist

Chloe is a dedicated women’s health physiotherapist whose personal and professional journey has shaped her compassionate approach to care. Early in her career, she noticed that many women’s health concerns, including incontinence, painful intercourse and fertility challenges, were often dismissed or left unspoken. This sparked her commitment to specialise in pelvic health and provide women with the support they deserve.

She pursued training in pelvic health assessment and management, and integrates Polestar Pilates principles into her practice to restore functional movement, postural alignment, and overall wellbeing.

Her personal decision to go through two unmedicated births reinforced her belief in the power of education, preparation, and informed support during pregnancy and beyond.
