Thoracic Pain During Pregnancy Treatment

Thoracic pain in pregnancy can feel sharp, achy, or like a band of tightness across your upper back or ribcage. At Calyx, we understand how this affects your daily comfort and sleep. Our physiotherapists support you with gentle, evidence-based care tailored to your pregnancy and your needs.

What Is Thoracic Pregnancy Pain Treatment?

Thoracic pain treatment during pregnancy supports your upper back and ribcage as your body changes. We use gentle, pregnancy-safe techniques to ease tightness, improve movement, and support your breathing and posture. If you are feeling sore, restricted, or just not yourself, this care can help you feel more like you again.

Is This Safe for Me?

Yes, treatment is safe when guided by qualified women’s health physiotherapists. All our approaches are adapted based on your trimester, symptoms, and medical history.

Who Should Consider Thoracic Pregnancy Pain Treatment?

If you are pregnant and feeling ongoing pain in your upper back, ribs, or sides, especially when resting, moving, or breathing deeply, physiotherapy may help. You do not have to wait for the pain to get worse. Support is available to help you feel more ease in your body again.

  • Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.

  • Is This Suitable Before or After Childbirth? Or Both?

Both. Physiotherapy for thoracic pain is helpful during pregnancy and after birth. Postnatally, pain in this area can continue or appear due to feeding positions, carrying your baby, or changes in posture. Early support can make everyday movements feel easier and more comfortable.

Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from Thoracic Pain Treatment

Common signs include:

  • Mid or upper back pain, often between the shoulder blades
  • Rib cage pain or tenderness, sometimes wrapping around the side
  • Pain that worsens with deep breathing
  • Difficulty sleeping due to upper back or side pain
  • Postural fatigue or upper body tension

These symptoms are common during pregnancy as your posture shifts and the thoracic spine works harder to support your changing body. Physiotherapy at Calyx gently relieves tension, restores mobility, and supports your breathing and posture so you can feel more at ease.

What Happens During Your Session

Your first session includes a thorough discussion, hands-on assessment, and gentle treatment techniques personalised to your body and trimester.

  • Will There Be an Internal Assessment?

No. Thoracic pain treatment is typically external. Assessment involves observing movement, palpating ribs and spine, and checking breathing mechanics.

  • Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If possible, bring your referral (if any), scan reports, and a list of activities or postures that aggravate your pain.

  • What Happens After the Session?

You’ll receive a personalised care plan, home stretches or posture strategies, and education on pain triggers and prevention. Understanding how your body responds to pregnancy changes is key to long-term relief.

Techniques and Tools We May Use

  • Hands-on soft tissue release
  • Rib and thoracic joint mobilisation
  • Breathing retraining and rib expansion techniques
  • Postural alignment support
  • Kinesiology taping for rib support
  • Stretching and mobility exercises
  • Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?

No. All treatments are designed to relieve pain, not cause it. We always check your comfort and modify techniques as needed.

  • How We Ensure Safety in Each Method

We follow pregnancy physiotherapy best practices, using supported side-lying or upright positions and adapting techniques to your comfort and stage. Every method is chosen with care to keep you and your baby safe while easing discomfort and restoring movement.

Your Progress and Results Over Time

  • How Soon Will I See Improvement?

Most women feel some relief in the first session. Consistency leads to sustained improvement.

  • How Often Will I Need Sessions?

Typically once a week to start. This may be adjusted based on your condition and goals.

  • Will I Need Maintenance Visits?

Yes, especially as your pregnancy progresses and your body continues to change. After your initial recovery, ongoing support can make a big difference. You may benefit from one-to-one preventive check-ins or by enrolling in Rooted for Birth, our signature programme designed to keep you strong, mobile, and well-prepared for pregnancy and childbirth.

  • What Do I Need to Do at Home?

We provide tailored stretches, breathing exercises, and ergonomic suggestions to reinforce progress made during your sessions.

CHLOE NG
Co-founder, Senior Physiotherapist

Chloe is a dedicated women’s health physiotherapist whose personal and professional journey has shaped her compassionate approach to care. Early in her career, she noticed that many women’s health concerns, including incontinence, painful intercourse and fertility challenges, were often dismissed or left unspoken. This sparked her commitment to specialise in pelvic health and provide women with the support they deserve.

She pursued training in pelvic health assessment and management, and integrates Polestar Pilates principles into her practice to restore functional movement, postural alignment, and overall wellbeing.

Her personal decision to go through two unmedicated births reinforced her belief in the power of education, preparation, and informed support during pregnancy and beyond.
