Pregnancy Rib Pain Treatment

Rib pain is common in pregnancy and often caused by your growing uterus, expanding rib cage, and changes in posture and breathing. It can feel sharp, achy, or tight, especially in the third trimester. At Calyx, our physiotherapists understand how these changes affect your body and use gentle, targeted care to relieve discomfort, improve movement, and help you breathe and rest more comfortably.

What Is Pregnancy Rib Pain Treatment?

Rib pain treatment at Calyx focuses on relieving discomfort through gentle manual therapy, posture support, and breathing techniques. Because rib mobility is closely linked to your core and pelvic floor function, we assess how your ribs, spine, and breathing patterns work together. This whole-body approach helps ease pain and support your pregnancy more comfortably.

Is This Safe for Me?

Yes. All treatment techniques are adapted for pregnant women and focus on comfort, positioning, and gentle release. Your safety, and your baby’s, are always our top priority.

Who Should Consider Pregnancy Rib Pain Treatment?

If you feel discomfort in your ribs when breathing, sitting, sleeping, lifting, or twisting, physiotherapy can help. Rib pain often begins in the second trimester and may worsen as your baby grows, but relief is possible with the right support.

  • Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.

  • Is This Suitable Before or After Childbirth? Or Both?

Both. While more common in the third trimester, some women also experience residual rib or thoracic pain postpartum. Treatment at any stage can aid relief and recovery.

Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from Rib Pain Pregnancy Treatment

Common signs include:

  • Pain under the breast or along the side of the rib cage
  • Discomfort when sitting or reclining
  • Pain with deep breathing or coughing
  • Clicking or tightness in the thoracic spine
  • Pain radiating from ribs to upper back

These symptoms are common in pregnancy as your rib cage expands, posture shifts, and soft tissues stretch to make space for your growing baby. At Calyx, we gently release tight areas, support rib and spine mobility, and guide you with strategies to breathe, move, and rest more comfortably.

What Happens During Your Session

During your session, we assess your ribs, spine, and posture, then provide gentle, pregnancy-safe treatment to ease pain and improve movement.

  • Will There Be an Internal Assessment?

Generally, no. Rib pain treatment is typically external and focuses on the thoracic spine, ribcage, and back.

  • Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you have any recent scans or doctor’s notes, bring them along.

  • What Happens After the Session?

We’ll explain the underlying mechanics of your pain and show you gentle techniques to manage symptoms at home. You’ll leave with practical tools and a better understanding of your body.

Techniques and Tools We May Use

  • Gentle rib and thoracic mobilisation
  • Myofascial release techniques
  • Diaphragmatic breathing training
  • Postural education and ergonomic support
  • Pregnancy-safe stretches and positioning
  • Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?

Treatments are gentle and adapted to your tolerance. Most clients feel relief during or after their session.

  • How We Ensure Safety in Each Method

Your comfort and safety come first. We use soft supports like pillows to position you with care and adapt every technique to suit your body and stage of pregnancy, following current clinical guidelines throughout.

Your Progress and Results Over Time

  • How Soon Will I See Improvement?

Every woman responds differently, but many experience relief within just a few sessions, especially when combined with daily stretches and changes in posture.

  • How Often Will I Need Sessions?

This depends on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy. Most clients benefit from weekly or fortnightly sessions until symptoms improve.

  • Will I Need Maintenance Visits?

After your initial recovery, ongoing support can make a big difference. You may benefit from one-to-one preventive check-ins or by enrolling in Rooted for Birth, our signature programme designed to keep you strong, mobile, and well-prepared for pregnancy and childbirth.

  • What Do I Need to Do at Home?

We’ll guide you through gentle movements and postural tips you can use daily, even when resting or sleeping.

CHLOE NG
Co-founder, Senior Physiotherapist

Chloe is a dedicated women’s health physiotherapist whose personal and professional journey has shaped her compassionate approach to care. Early in her career, she noticed that many women’s health concerns, including incontinence, painful intercourse and fertility challenges, were often dismissed or left unspoken. This sparked her commitment to specialise in pelvic health and provide women with the support they deserve.

She pursued training in pelvic health assessment and management, and integrates Polestar Pilates principles into her practice to restore functional movement, postural alignment, and overall wellbeing.

Her personal decision to go through two unmedicated births reinforced her belief in the power of education, preparation, and informed support during pregnancy and beyond.
