Postpartum Assessment in Singapore
The early months after childbirth are a time of immense physical and emotional change. At Calyx in Singapore, our postpartum assessments are tailored to support new mothers in navigating this transformation with confidence and care. Whether you’re weeks or months into your recovery, our expert women’s physiotherapists are here to guide you safely through each stage.
What Is a Postpartum Assessment?
A postpartum assessment is a comprehensive check-up conducted by a women’s health physiotherapist to evaluate how your body is healing and functioning after childbirth. It includes a detailed review of your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, posture, breathing, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. This assessment helps to identify concerns early and create a recovery plan.
Is This Safe for Me?
Absolutely. Postpartum assessments are safe for all mothers, whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or caesarean section. Every session is conducted with clinical care and sensitivity.
Who Should Consider a Postpartum Assessment?
Every woman who has given birth should consider a postpartum assessment. You don’t need to be in pain to benefit. Many mums use it to establish a clear baseline for their recovery.
-
Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with us. If needed, we’re happy to coordinate care with your OBGYN or GP.
-
How soon after giving birth should I see a physiotherapist?
You can book a postpartum physiotherapy assessment as early as 6 weeks, once you’ve had your postnatal gynae check-up. However, it’s never too late. Even months or years later, physiotherapy can help address lingering issues like core weakness, pelvic pain or incontinence.
Symptoms and Signs You May Benefit from a Postpartum Assessment
Common Signs Include:
- Pelvic heaviness or dragging sensation
- Leaking urine with laughing, sneezing, or exercise
- Pain during intimacy
- Separation of abdominal muscles (Diastasis Recti)
- Lower back, pelvic, or hip pain
- Feeling disconnected from your core
- Difficulty returning to exercise safely
- Persistent fatigue or poor posture when holding your baby
Each of these signs points to potential changes in your pelvic or musculoskeletal system that we can support through targeted rehabilitation.
What Happens During Your Session
You’ll be guided through a thorough and compassionate process designed to meet you where you are in your recovery journey.
-
Will There Be an Internal Vaginal Assessment?
An internal pelvic floor assessment is offered but never required. It allows your physiotherapist to assess how your pelvic floor is recovering after birth.
We can also explore alternative methods such as external pelvic floor assessment or real-time ultrasound to gather information about your pelvic floor function. While these alternatives can still be helpful, they may provide limited insight compared to an internal assessment. -
Do I Need to Prepare or Bring Anything?
Wear comfortable clothing. If you have any birth records or previous assessments, feel free to bring them.
-
What Happens After the Session?
You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your current condition and a personalised recovery plan. This may include personalised exercises, ergonomic advice and strategies for daily life with a baby.
Techniques and Tools We May Use
- Real-time ultrasound for biofeedback
- Pelvic floor and core reconnection
- Manual therapy for scar tissue or tight muscles
- Ergonomic Advice for breastfeeding, lifting and carrying your baby
- These techniques are tailored to your needs and stage of recovery, helping you heal with confidence and care.
-
Is It Painful or Uncomfortable?
Most techniques are gentle and non-invasive. If any part feels uncomfortable, we adjust or stop immediately.
-
How We Ensure Safety in Each Method
We practise trauma-informed care, which means nothing is ever done without your consent, and you are in control of the process. We pause or adjust as needed.
Your Progress and Results Over Time
Your recovery is a journey, and we’re with you at every stage.
-
When Can I Start Exercising?
Your physiotherapist will perform a comprehensive check to determine when and how to safely begin exercising. In most cases, gentle movement can start as early as two weeks postpartum. Based on your recovery stage and assessment findings, your physio will tailor the type and intensity of exercises to suit your body’s needs.
-
Can You Tell If I Have Abdominal Separation (Diastasis Recti)?
Yes. Our physiotherapists will palpate along the midline of your belly to determine the width, depth, and tension of the gap. We’ll also assess how your core and pelvic floor are working together, which is key to safe recovery.
-
What Support Is Available After the Initial Assessment?
After early recovery, continued support can help you regain strength and confidence as you care for your baby and step into your new (or expanded) role as a mum. You may benefit from one-to-one check-ins or join Regrounded After Birth, our signature programme designed to support healing, movement, and a safe return to daily life and higher-level exercise.
-
Will I Know If I’m Ready to Return to Exercise?
Yes. Your physiotherapist will guide you through specific movement checks and criteria to assess whether your body is ready. Readiness depends on factors like core and pelvic floor function, the type of exercise you want to return to and your fitness level before and during pregnancy.
